Mel O’Callaghan (she/her), b. 1975 Gadigal Land/ Sydney Mel O’Callaghan is an Australian artist based between France and Australia since 2007. Her practice spans video, sound, painting, performance, and large-scale installation, exploring the body and mind’s capacity to transcend limits, embrace transformation, and connect with forces beyond the human. Central to her work is an investigation into resonance—sonic, vibrational, and mineral—where materials, bodies, and environments act as conduits of energy and memory. Through her use of mineral pigments, geological research, and sound-based performance, O’Callaghan reveals the origins of matter and the vibrational forces that sustain life.
She was laureate of the Prix Carta Bianca in 2024 and the Prix SAM in 2015. In 2026, she will present a solo project atthe Musée d’Art Moderne de Ville de Paris and a monumental performance commissioned by the Sydney Opera House.
O’Callaghan’s work invites audiences into experiences of endurance, vulnerability, and communion— with nature, and with each other, and the unseen forces that bind them, from the pulse of the human heart to the resonance of the Earth itself.

‘LIVE ECHO’SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, SYDNEY11 APRIL 2026

Live Echo, by Mel O’Callaghan, is a large-scale choral performance developed for the Monumental Steps of the Sydney Opera House. With a durational, site-responsive score, the work investigates resonance as a relational condition between bodies, voices, architecture and environment, examining how collective sound generates shared states of attention, attunement and transformation.

At the core of Live Echo is a conceptual shift from breath toward the heart as a rhythmic and organising principle. This frames the work around timing, synchronisation, drift and collective presence rather than individual virtuosity. Sound is not only something heard but something that moves through bodies and space. Drawing on O’Callaghan’s background in dance, music is conceived as a form of choreography, with voices acting as moving elements in a larger spatial and temporal composition.

The musical foundation of Live Echo was developed on the Opera House’s Grand Organ. Untrained in music, O’Callaghan approached the organ intuitively, conceiving each key not as a technical device but as a voice. In this way, the organ became an extension of the Opera House itself, with harmonic foundations drawn from the water beneath the building on Bennelong Point.

Further development took place in collaboration with organist and academic Dr Sing Darcy, whose research focuses on music in sacred and ritualised spaces. The organ material was arranged into a large-scale choral score by Dan Walker, one of Australia’s most celebrated choral composers, who transformed the instrument’s tonal character into an ambitious work for 300 voices, preserving its expressive intensity while expanding it into a collective form.

A central conceptual driver of Live Echo is entrainment, the process by which rhythms synchronise over time in a dynamic process of alignment, drift and recalibration. This idea was informed by research at the University of Bern into how the heart rates of singers synchronise with music during performance. It was also shaped by research into breath and altered states of consciousness developed with Dr Sabine Rittner at the University of Heidelberg.

The work’s harmonic language sits outside the western tonal system known as equal temperament. These sounds, which recall European tuning practices that existed before pitch standardisation, align with diverse musical traditions where flexible pitch remains common, including Indian classical music. In Live Echo, microtonality emerges intuitively, allowing pitch to settle where resonance leads. Four monumental tuning forks tuned to 256 hertz activate sympathetic resonance, extending vibration from the human body to an architectural, collective scale.

Live Echo has been realised with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs under Brett Weymark, Music and Artistic Director, and supported by the curatorial vision of Micheal Do. Costumes have been designed with reference to Homage to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, a tapestry by Opera House architect Jørn Utzon, translating colour, rhythm, performance and procession into a living sonic work.

A small group of soloists are focal points within the larger choral body. These include soprano Ria Andriani, a long-term collaborator of O’Callaghan; soprano Josephine Brereton, whose voice reaches extreme upper registers; and bass Andrew O’Connor, whose sustained low frequencies anchor the harmonic field.

‘PULSE OF THE PLANET’MUSÉE D’ART MODERNE5 FEBRUARY 2026

Performed in front of Matisse’s La Danse inachevée (1931) at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, a performer sounds a costume of cymbals to the rhythm of the Earth’s heartbeat. A symbiocenic body emerges, where humans and nature coexist. 
The Earth’s heartbeat refers to the frequency generated by vibrations beneath the planet’s crust.&#38;nbsp;
Long measured at around 7.83 Hz, it has recently increased closer to 8 Hz — still far too low for the human ear to hear — revealing the dynamic and complex nature of our planet. Intrigued by the irregularities of the heart’s rhythm, which is only perfectly consistent just before death, this work considers variation and inconsistency as signs of vitality, health, and the vibrancy of life.

‘ALL IS LIFE’

First Sound, Last Sound is a durational performance featuring two large-scale tuning forks
installed on a resonant chamber. When played, the tuning forks emit a fundamental note
that creates a sympathetic call and response between the tuning forks and with the body
on a cellular level that is in solidarity with the heartbeat of the Earth.

					
During a series of performances, performers and audience members will become conduits
for sympathetic sound and will be called into an awareness of their own somatic rhythms,
calmed nervous system—pulse, breath, and movement—and to consider the notion that
the Earth, too, is a living organism.

					
To create this work, O’Callaghan worked with a musicologist at the University of Sydney
and fabricators at Eveleigh Works (an industrial blacksmith workshop in Gadigal, Sydney)
on the fabrication of two three metre tall steel tuning forks, each weighing 800 kilograms.
Tuning forks are primarily used as handheld acoustic resonators utilized to calibrate a
standard pitch for musical instruments, as they emit a pure musical tone related to the
length and mass of the fork’s two prongs, or tines.

Sculptures which have the capacity to bring about altered states of consciousness in To Hear With My Eyes allow us to feel their underlying power. Each day, silhouettes dressed all in black come to activate these objects,
following the precepts theorised by anthropologist Felicitas D. Goodman about alterations in consciousness
achieved through 'Ritual Body Postures'. Repetition, in gesture and in vision, is at the heart of Mel O’Callaghan’s
work - and allows us to access meditative states. The artist invents rituals that are at once physical and
conceptual, and present the visitor with the opportunity to not only continually transform their relationship to the
work but also to the world.

PALAIS DE TOKYO, PARIS2016Originally commissioned for the 19th Biennale of Sydney, 'Parade' consists of a series of upright metal pipes shaped to form ladders and bars, pulley systems and weights, all sitting atop a large platform that emphasised its sculptural, object status, as well as its theatrical presence and the notion of ‘demonstration’...Most precisely, 'Parade' links to a type of performance art that explores body and movement. A derivation but radical departure from dance to a more social/sculptural relationship between body, space, object and audience that takes its cue from the actions of the commonplace, or Michel de Certeau’s ‘everyday’, and references a certain awareness of Karl Marx’s theory of surplus labour.- Juliana Engberg

An almost transparent installation, capturing and reflecting all the variations in colors and light emanating from the lake, 'Respire, Respire' proposes instruments of communication with our own body, which dialogue with the surrounding landscape at the same time. The study of rituals in different civilizations, led for a long time by Mel O‘Callaghan, often takes a deep desire for communion with the human and vegetable or mineral forms that inhabit our planet as a starting point, and makes them resonate with each other and within ourselves. Through a collection of sculptures, films, paintings, and performances, the artist often explores the immersive power of trance but also, paradoxically, this way of being able to go “outside oneself,” the limits of one’s own body, to reach a state of symbiosis with what surrounds us, just like memory, gesture, and transmission. Thus, facing the lake, these crystal capsules reflect, deform, and transform the space into almost liquid matter by playing with prisms of color. The shapes of the sculptures themselves, round, elongated, convex and concave, are freely inspired by the observation of extremophiles—underwater organisms thriving in so-called “extreme” conditions—which she also captures in the film ‘Centre of the Centre’ (2019), tracing the origins of life and its regenerating forces. Therefore, it is life that we are talking about here, above all. The titles of the works thus set the tone and dictate a rhythm. ‘Respire, Respire’ thinks about the foundation of all life and exposes breath, both as an elementary impulse and as a source of connection to the abundant depths. In collaboration with Sabine Rittner (associate researcher and music therapist at the Institute of Medical Psychology at the University Hospital of Heidelberg in Germany), the artist has imagined a performance based on inhalation and exhalation techniques, aiming to provoke joy or serenity, but also and above all to provoke altered states of consciousness and moments of meditation, ecstasy, or hallucination. In a crescendo of intensity, the work of art becomes global. The landscape opens and diaphragms too; the sound of the performer’s breaths pulsates through the works as well as the hearts of visitors.
