Performed in front of Matisse’s La Danse inachevée (1931) at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, a performer sounds a costume of cymbals to the rhythm of the Earth’s heartbeat. A symbiocenic body emerges, where humans and nature coexist.
The Earth’s heartbeat refers to the frequency generated by vibrations beneath the planet’s crust. Long measured at around 7.83 Hz, it has recently increased closer to 8 Hz — still far too low for the human ear to hear — revealing the dynamic and complex nature of our planet. Intrigued by the irregularities of the heart’s rhythm, which is only perfectly consistent just before death, this work considers variation and inconsistency as signs of vitality, health, and the vibrancy of life.
